The appointment marks a leadership transition at Contend, the company working to make legal help accessible to everyone, as co-founder William Boan steps back from day-to-day operations.

Contend, the legal technology company on a mission to make accessible legal help a reality for everyone, is entering what its leadership is calling “a new chapter” and it is doing so with a new face at the helm of its technology.

The company announced this week that Timothy Capes has stepped into the role of Chief Technology Officer. Capes is not new to Contend: he has already played a significant part in building the platform, and his appointment formalises the central role he has come to hold.

“Tim has already played a huge role in helping us build Contend. He brings thoughtfulness, technical judgment, and a deep care for the people we are trying to help.”

The announcement also marks a transition for co-founder William Boan, who is stepping back from day-to-day operations at the company he helped create. The departure was acknowledged with warmth by Mike Stych Contend’s CEO, who credited Boan with being an essential part of getting the company to where it stands today.

“Starting a company is incredibly hard, and I’m proud of what we were able to build together,” Mike Stych wrote in a note accompanying the announcement.

“This is a moment of gratitude for what helped get Contend here, and excitement for the team leading us into what comes next.”

Founded with the belief that everyone deserves access to quality legal guidance regardless of their circumstances, Contend has been building tools to close the gap between people and the legal system, a gap that disproportionately affects those without the means to hire traditional legal counsel.

With Capes now leading the technology function, Contend enters its next phase with continuity in its product vision and a leadership team that has been tested by the demands of building something genuinely new.

“Everyone deserves accessible legal help, and there’s still so much work to do.” đź’ś
